For years the state of Louisiana has had a huge gap in available care for those struggling with addiction. In a 2019 study done by Touro Infirmary, researchers found that the top concern for New Orleans residents was the lack of available behavioral health care, and only 1.4% of people suffering from addiction in the city are currently receiving treatment. “The number of drug-related deaths continues to surpass the number of homicides in the city (of New Orleans),” said Orleans Parish Coroner Dwight McKenna.
