Moderate to severe depression
Someone suffering from severe depression will have all the above symptoms along with suicidal thoughts and hallucinations or delusions. Additionally, those with severe depression can suffer from these symptoms for years.
Mild to moderate depression
Moderate depression includes similar symptoms to mild depression and other more severe symptoms such as decreased energy, changes in weight or appetite, difficulty sleeping, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
Behind the Diagnosis
What Causes Depression?
Brain chemistry
Various factors, including brain chemistry, can cause depression. When you have depression, your brain may not produce enough serotonin (a chemical that helps regulate mood) or norepinephrine (a hormone and neurotransmitter that affects how the body responds to stress).
Hormone levels
Hormone levels can also affect your mental health. For example, thyroid disease or low testosterone (in men) may cause depression symptoms. In women, this can be caused by changes in hormone levels during menopause, pregnancy, and after giving birth.
Family history
Your family history may also influence your risk for depression. If you have a parent or sibling who has this disorder, you are more likely to develop it yourself.
Early childhood trauma
Traumatic experiences in childhood, such as physical or sexual abuse, can increase your risk of developing depression later in life. Trauma negatively affects the brain, increasing the risk of developing mental health conditions.
Substance use
Using certain drugs or alcohol can also lead to depression. Marijuana, ecstasy, amphetamines, cocaine, are all examples of substances that may contribute to mental health problems later in life.

Levels of Care: Inpatient vs. Outpatient
At NOLA Detox, we offer multiple structured levels of care to ensure our Louisiana clients can find the right level of programming based on where they are in their recovery ranging from people who need complete support 24 hours per day to those who may have had a relapse and need additional outpatient services.
Medical Detox & Inpatient Treatment
When clients first reach out to our admissions team, we will go over what level of care we provide, and what level we suggest given individual circumstances.
Our medical detox and inpatient programs are the highest level of care we offer, providing an immersive, 24/7 residential program where clients can reside at our facility and completely step away from their home environment and triggers.
During these programs, clients with severe depression that causes functional impairment can work through initial addiction withdrawal on our medical team for support and transition to individual group therapy to help with depression symptom management.
Outpatient Treatment & Recovery Residences
Our next level of care is our outpatient program where clients can participate in treatment while residing at home or in a structured sober living facility. This type of outpatient program is best for clients whose depression and substance use symptoms are stable, but still need to work on trigger management and healthy coping skills.

How Our Amenities Improve Treatment
One of the things that encourages clients looking for a depression treatment center in New Orleans, based to choose our facility is what we offer above and beyond inpatient and outpatient programs: our amenities.
At NOLA Detox, we provide high-quality amenities that serve as vital therapies, not just luxuries. Many clients struggling with depression struggle with a removed sense of self-worth and limited physical energy. That is why staying in our exquisite environment with things like professional laundry care and constant access to local fresh coffee can help restore individual dignity.
The comfort foods we provide from local restaurants go a long way toward encouraging and establishing a routine and reducing stress hormones for our clients. Clients who can look forward to familiar comfort foods, and the evening ritual of cookies and milk tend to have an easier emotional transition as they make their way into early sobriety.
The Clinical Importance of a Natural Environment
The amenities are merely one of several parts that make our campus stand out. With a spacious, natural backdrop, our facility offers what has been clinically proven to reduce symptoms of an overstimulated nervous system, including depression. Our spacious, natural backdrop includes an 8 acre, Park like campus with open green spaces and quiet walking trails. These spaces are not only clinically proven to help reduce stress hormones and boost mood, but they provide ample space for self-reflection and positive engagement.
These outdoor spaces are where many of our health and wellness services are offered like our exercise courses and our weekly community campfires.
Our Program
What to Expect: A Typical Day in Recovery
Clients who participate in our inpatient and residential levels of care will receive an immersive and highly structured experience day today. Clients work to regain their behavioral stability by waking up every morning and undergoing medical checks and breakfast then engaging in comprehensive clinical work including individual trauma counseling, dual diagnosis group therapy, and behavioral education workshops.
After a break for lunch and a dedicated period of mindfulness or outdoor recreationClients can take advantage of the walking trails in our natural environment or play volleyball on our sand volleyball courts. In the evenings, everyone gathers for communal dinner and participates in things like peer support meetings or time in our game room before unwinding with a nightly cookie-and-milk activity.
Clients who participate in our outpatient program focus more on developing real world autonomy while still maintaining stability. Treatment takes the form of structured, 3 hour therapy sessions offered either during the day or in the evening, during which time clients participate in things like relapse prevention plans, coping strategies, and group therapy sessions.
In between these sessions clients are able to return home and practice those emotional management skills in real world opportunities, maintain constant communication with friends and family who are supportive of their recovery, and come back to our center ongoing engagement opportunities.
