Jefferson, Orleans Drug Overdose Statistics in 2023
According to FOX8 News, drug overdoses in Jefferson Parish are still on the rise. Jefferson’s Parish coroner — Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich — projected the number of deaths caused by drug overdose in 2023 to be between 250 and 280, which is slightly higher than those recorded in 2022.
When asked about drug overdose cases in Jefferson, Cvitanovich said, “I think it’s worse, probably, in any metropolitan area, especially a metropolitan area like ours where there’s a lot of, you know, fun going on, a lot of partying going on… but it’s bad everywhere.”
The coroner’s predictions are in line with reports by the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, whose studies show that there have been over 1,267 overdose deaths per year in Louisiana and that drug overdoses account for 2.75% of the cases. The studies further indicate that Louisiana has an overdose death rate of 28.3 individuals per 100,000 residents, which is 37% above the national average.
To counter the effects of drug use and overdose, the New Orleans Health Department has offered overdose response training to 1,392 people and administered Narcan doses to another 5,214 individuals.
Local New Orleans addiction treatment centers are also doing their part to help those in need.
